Our Story

James often tells people it took him four years to find the perfect moment to ask out Madeline…

It started like this. Madeline was a freshman in high school and James was a sophomore. They had the same lunch period and James noticed Madeline at the next lunch table over. He noticed her smile and laugh. James always remembered her and would see her passing by in the hall. He later said that for some reason he knew there was something special about that girl; he wanted to figure out a way to talk to her. James saw Madeline around school for the next few years, but was still stumped as to how to find a way to talk to her without coming off as weird.

Fast forward to Madeline’s junior year and James’ senior year in high school, Madeline was sitting in her Physics class on the first day of school and this very tall guy walks in the room just before the tardy bell rang. He was wearing a Hollister shirt and jeans, carrying a tablet computer. She still remembers that moment when she first saw him, as she thought that he was the teacher. Madeline quickly realized it was just another student named James when the teacher came in and started calling roll. James realized that the girl from his lunch period a few years back was in his class and was determined to find a way to talk to her. He had hoped that they would be assigned to the same lab table.

January rolled around and lab tables were switched several times, but Madeline and James were never assigned to the same one, so James decided to take action. One of his friends was assigned to sit next to Madeline, so one day he sat down next to his friend in Madeline’s chair before the start of class. Madeline walked in and saw him sitting in her chair and politely asked him to move, which of course he declared he would not. James joked around with Madeline until class started and eventually gave her back her seat. After visiting a few times before class, James offered to help Madeline with homework and they became friends.

The next summer, after James graduated and went to college, they stopped keeping in touch. Then, in late fall, after James heard through the grapevine that Madeline would be going on a college visit to his school, Texas A&M (WHOOP!), he reached out and they began talking regularly. In January of 2009, James asked Madeline on a ‘sort of’ date to get coffee. After four hours of what they both describe to be the best date of their lives, James asked Madeline out on a date, and the rest is history.

Bridesmaids

  • cline

Caroline is my dear sister and other soul mate. I have looked up to her in every way since I was a little nugget. I even played clarinet for 7 years because that is what she did! From our hula hoop marathons to two person dance parties, I have shared many wonderful memories with my best friend and sister. She has the biggest heart, greatest sense of humor, and is totally weird in the best way. I adore her for those things and so much more. Even though Caroline has moved across the pond, we continue to share our lives with one another through video dates and count down the days until we are reunited again. I am so excited to have my sister be part of the big day, as my maid of honor, and cannot wait to celebrate her future wedding with her and her fiancé, Miguel.

  • emily

Emily and I first looked into each other’s eyes at a Jazz, Tap, and Ballet class during our elementary school days. Unfortunately it was not love at first sight. Neither was our next meeting as dueling extracurricular groups during high school. However, we became the best of friends as freshmen in college after running into each other in our dormitory, hoping to see a familiar face. Our friendship grew and we became roommates of three years, referring to ourselves as ‘the ladies of apartment 325.’ We were pretty much inseparable, essentially Lucy and Ethel. Emily still lives in Austin, but we don’t miss a beat anytime we see each other. She is my other sister and one of the smartest and loving people I have known.

  • Sarah 2 for cropping

Sarah and I met on the first day of college at UT in Sociology class. I sat down wishing that someone normal and seemingly nice would sit down next to me.  Luckily Sarah dropped out of the sky and my wish came true! We bonded over being from Houston, living in the same dormitory, and a shared love of comfy clothing. Sarah starting coming to dinners with the rest of ‘the crew’ that lived in our dorm and we became fast friends. She is simply the kindest person and is whimsically adorable.  After our college days, Sarah moved back to Houston and we continue to enjoy spending time together, going on brewery tours, searching for the city’s best fried pickles, and going on double dates with her and her boyfriend (James’ Best Man). I am so glad she was the first friend I made at UT!

  • jaimie

Jaimie and I first saw each other in our dormitory study room freshman year at UT. When telling people how we met, Jaimie swears she was impressed by my fashion (including a peace sign belt buckle that she remembers vividly) and claims she knew she wanted to be friends with that girl. She kindly omits the part where I abruptly ran out of the study room crying because I did not understand a word of the Advanced Biology book I was reading. I never thought I would see Jaimie again after that embarrassingly dramatic ordeal, but it turned out she lived with one of my high school friends and she showed up at dinner that week. Jaimie and I became great friends after laughing about our first encounter.  We spent most of our free time together for the next four years. After college, Jaimie and I became roommates in Houston and started our post college adventures playing BINGO on Thursdays, baking cakes, and exploring the best Happy Hours. She has the best comedic timing, the fiercest legs, and is one heck of an amazing friend.

  • rubi

Rubi and I met towards the beginning of our high school years. We instantly bonded over a shared love of rocking our clarinets and an obsession with Harry Potter books.  Long story short, we were awesome. Most of our high school stories start off as Band Camp stories and most of our other stories involve visits to Texas A&M, where she goes to school, or visits to UT, where I went to school. Rubes has a huge caring heart and is one of the most selfless people I have ever met. She is simply fabulous and I am so glad we have been friends for almost a decade.

Groomsmen

  • Kevin for cropping

Kevin and I met at a weekly dinner that our group of friends referred to as “BBQ Monday” when we were underclassmen at Texas A&M University (Whoop!). Essentially we bonded over eating BBQ together on Mondays. Kevin and I were both Computer Engineering Majors and had several classes together over the years. We were roommates first when interning in Austin for a summer, then senior year in school, and now we are still roommates. Kevin is my best friend and no matter what we end up doing together when we hang out, we always have a good time. Most of the legendary nights of my college years were spent with him by my side. I am so lucky to have him as my best man.

  • IMG_8114

Brian and I met for the first time shortly after I started my job at Chevron, where he was assigned as my mentor. We quickly became friends over our shared interests in technology, security, and food. We can talk for hours about anything from an obscure new security vulnerability all the way to what’s for lunch. Brian and I relate via our shared security mindsets and strong desires for knowledge. I’m so fortunate to have Brian as my mentor, friend, and now, groomsman.

  • miguel

Miguel and I met a few years back when he first started dating his now fiancé, Caroline (Madeline’s sister). He is quite the tech enthusiast and anytime we’re together, there is sure to be a conversation that neither Madeline nor Caroline will understand or participate in. We’ve spent holidays together and have bonded over being the boyfriends, and now fiancé’s of the Hartmann sisters. Miguel currently lives in London with Caroline, leading to lengthy Skype video calls with the four of us. I’m so excited to have my future brother-in-law as my groomsman.

Pup of Honor

Toulouse ‘Lucy’ Shoshanna is the best pup we could have hoped for. She gives the best hugs, is nice to all that she meets, and has the most joyful smile. She came into our lives in September of 2013 and we have felt so lucky to have her ever since. While she won’t be at the church to help us celebrate on our wedding day, she deserves honorable mention as our favorite puppy that we can always count on for lots of love. We simply adore her.
